Kate Spade was an American fashion designer, businesswoman, and author. She co-founded the fashion design house ‘Kate Spade New York’ and the fashion brand ‘Frances Valentine’. Her accolades include two CFDA Fashion Awards for the best accessory designer of the year. Spade was born Katherine Noel Brosnahan on December 24, 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri. Her parents were June and Earl Francis Brosnahan. She had an older sister named Reta Saffo. Spade attended St. Teresa’s Academy followed by the University of Kansas. She transferred to and graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in journalism.

CAREER
After college, Spade landed a job as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine in Manhattan, New York. She rose to the title of senior fashion editor and head of accessories. Her work was credited in the magazine as Katy Brosnahan. She left Mademoiselle in 1991. Kate and Andy Spade launched the design company ‘Kate Spade Handbags’ in 1993. The company started out making handbags before extending to clothing, jewelry, fragrance, eyewear, etc. Kate Spade New York has since grown to more than 180 stores worldwide. The company was acquired by Neiman Marcus Group and later by Liz Claiborne Inc. It was subsequently bought by Tapestry, Inc. for a reported $2.4 billion in 2017.

In 2004, Spade released three books ‘Manners’, ‘Occasions’ and ‘Style’. All three books were edited by Ruth Peltason and illustrated by Virginia Johnson. They were published by Simon & Schuster. Spade’s second business venture ‘Frances Valentine’ was founded in 2016. She partnered with longtime friend Elyce Arons and shoe designer Paola Venturi. Frances Valentine specializes in handbags and footwear. In 2016, Kate legally changed her surname to ‘Valentine’ to accompany the company.

Kate Spade died on June 5, 2018, at the age of 55. Her cause of death was an apparent suicide. She was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment in New York City. A suicide note addressed to her daughter was left behind. Spade was about 5ft 2in tall and she was of Irish descent. Her personal net worth was estimated at $200 million. Kate was married to entrepreneur ‘Andy Spade’ from 1994 until her death. The couple met back in 1983 at Arizona State University. They welcomed a daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, in February 2005. Andy is the brother of actor/comedian David Spade.
