Boise, ID (CBS2) — The Supreme Court is weighing whether or not Trump can be removed from the Colorado ballot. Idaho's Secretary of State Phil McGrane was there and discussed with Nate Shelman his views following opening arguments.
The Supreme Court is considering whether a state can keep a presidential candidate off the ballot based on accusations. Trump has not been convicted of a crime. McGrane said today was surprising because of the nature of the case and being able to follow along as they make their decision.
The case the Supreme Court looks at specifically is Colorado's removal of Trump from the ballot based on section three of the Fourteenth Amendment. A group of Secretary of State filed an amicus brief with the Court to try and influence the Court's decision.
McGrane says the Justices recognized the significance of this case as the states argued that you can't have all fifty states doing their own thing in a presidential election.
McGrane also noted that all the Justices seemed to be skeptical about the reasons behind Colorado's decision stating that section three of the Fourteenth Amendment doesn't mention the Presidency.
McGrane thinks there will be a decision soon because of the way all of the Justices seemed to be leaning today, though we will have to wait and see.
