Joe Santos was an American film and television actor best know for his role on The Rockford Files. He was born Joseph Minieri on June 9, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Joseph and Rose Minieri. Santos attended Fordham University where he played football. He worked a string of jobs (railroad worker, tree trimmer, barkeep) prior to his acting career.
CAREER
Santos made his film debut in the 1964 flick, Flesh and Lace. The film was written and directed by his cousin ‘Joseph W. Sarno’. Santos often played the role of a ‘good cop’ in his films. His first police role was that of “Detective Hank” in the 1966 drama, Moonlighting Wives. He appeared in over 20 films including Shaft’s Big Score, Shamus, Sinatra and Mo’ Money.
Santos rose to prominence in the mid 1970s with his starring role on the television drama series, The Rockford Files. He played the character “Dennis Becker” from 1974-1980. He was later cast as “Frank Harper” on the action-drama series, Hardcastle and McCormick. Other notable television appearances include MacGyver, Magnum P.I., and The Sopranos.
